CHAPTER EIGHT
HARRY WAS WAITING for Isla when she came off duty after the handover.
âIâm seeing you home,â he said.
âThank you, but thereâs no need,â she said.
âActually, there is. You had a rotten shift.â He paused. âAnd Iâd just feel a bit happier if I saw you home and made you a bacon sandwich.â
âTough. I donât have any bacon.â
âThen weâll do plan B,â he said. âI know a very nice café not far from here where they do the best bacon sandwiches ever. And a bacon sandwich with a mug of tea is the best answer to a rubbish shift.â
âYouâre not going to give up, are you?â she asked.
He smiled. âNope.â
âA bacon sandwich would be nice,â she admitted, âbut Iâm buying. To say thanks for rescuing me earlier.â
âAm I allowed to buy us a mug of tea, then?â
âI guess so.â She smiled at him.
They walked to the café together, where they ordered bacon sandwiches and a large pot of tea with two mugs.
âThanks again for rescuing me,â she said.
âIâd do the same for any colleague who was being hassled by a patient,â he said.
âI donât mean just thatâweâd all step inâbut the fact that you believed me.â
âOf course I did,â he said softly. âBut thatâs why I wanted to have breakfast with you this morning. Because I donât want the behaviour of a stupid, thoughtless patient ripping open some fairly recent scars.â
âIt did, a bit,â she admitted. âIt made me remember the look on Andrewâs face when I turned him down, and then how my life suddenly went into quicksand mode.â And it was still her biggest fear: that someone would make another false accusation against her, that even though she was exonerated people would still think sheâd done something wrong, and sheâd have to pick up the wreckage of her life all over again.
Harry reached across the table and squeezed her hand. âI know you had a tough time on the island, but thatâs not going to be repeated here,â he reassured her. âApart from the fact that every single person in our department knows youâre totally professional, the guy was drunk and obnoxious.â He paused. âThereâs more to it than that, isnât there?â
She sighed, suddenly too tired to hold it in any more. âI was so scared you wouldnât back me.â
âOf course Iâd back you! Youâre my colleague and my friend.â He frowned, as if remembering something. âBut you said your ex didnât back you when his stepfather lied about you. Why not?â
She sighed. âI guess for him there were only two possibilities. One was that I was a faithless liar who was trying to cheat on him with his stepfather and was lying even more about it to save my own skin when Iâd been found out. The other was that I was telling the truth, and the man whoâd brought him up since he was two and treated him as if Stewart was his biological son rather than his adopted son was capable of cheating on Stewartâs mother.
