CHAPTER EIGHT

HARRY WAS WAITING for Isla when she came off duty after the handover.

‘I’m seeing you home,’ he said.

‘Thank you, but there’s no need,’ she said.

‘Actually, there is. You had a rotten shift.’ He paused. ‘And I’d just feel a bit happier if I saw you home and made you a bacon sandwich.’

‘Tough. I don’t have any bacon.’

‘Then we’ll do plan B,’ he said. ‘I know a very nice café not far from here where they do the best bacon sandwiches ever. And a bacon sandwich with a mug of tea is the best answer to a rubbish shift.’

‘You’re not going to give up, are you?’ she asked.

He smiled. ‘Nope.’

‘A bacon sandwich would be nice,’ she admitted, ‘but I’m buying. To say thanks for rescuing me earlier.’

‘Am I allowed to buy us a mug of tea, then?’

‘I guess so.’ She smiled at him.

They walked to the café together, where they ordered bacon sandwiches and a large pot of tea with two mugs.

‘Thanks again for rescuing me,’ she said.

‘I’d do the same for any colleague who was being hassled by a patient,’ he said.

‘I don’t mean just that—we’d all step in—but the fact that you believed me.’

‘Of course I did,’ he said softly. ‘But that’s why I wanted to have breakfast with you this morning. Because I don’t want the behaviour of a stupid, thoughtless patient ripping open some fairly recent scars.’

‘It did, a bit,’ she admitted. ‘It made me remember the look on Andrew’s face when I turned him down, and then how my life suddenly went into quicksand mode.’ And it was still her biggest fear: that someone would make another false accusation against her, that even though she was exonerated people would still think she’d done something wrong, and she’d have to pick up the wreckage of her life all over again.

Harry reached across the table and squeezed her hand. ‘I know you had a tough time on the island, but that’s not going to be repeated here,’ he reassured her. ‘Apart from the fact that every single person in our department knows you’re totally professional, the guy was drunk and obnoxious.’ He paused. ‘There’s more to it than that, isn’t there?’

She sighed, suddenly too tired to hold it in any more. ‘I was so scared you wouldn’t back me.’

‘Of course I’d back you! You’re my colleague and my friend.’ He frowned, as if remembering something. ‘But you said your ex didn’t back you when his stepfather lied about you. Why not?’

She sighed. ‘I guess for him there were only two possibilities. One was that I was a faithless liar who was trying to cheat on him with his stepfather and was lying even more about it to save my own skin when I’d been found out. The other was that I was telling the truth, and the man who’d brought him up since he was two and treated him as if Stewart was his biological son rather than his adopted son was capable of cheating on Stewart’s mother.
